Bolzano, at 8.30 am on a day at the end of September. We meet Eugen and Bettina in their office in Bolzano. Between them, they run the sports agency, bike&more and are involved in nearly all the notable XC or marathon races in the local area.
"We seldom get a chance to bike, for the business always keeps us busy organising our events. However, now and again we manage to find time to get out and about on our bikes. And then we like to cycle at a leisurely pace, " explains Bettina, when they have finished telling up where their favourite tour will take us today, namely from Bolzano towards Lake Caldaro and along the Val d'Adige cycle track back to Bolzano.
We follow Eugen and Bettina out of the town into the green countryside. Every time the pedals go round we leave the noise and flurry of the bustling regional capital farther behind us and South Tyrol's real attractions reveal themselves: first of all the apple orchards, then the course of the River Adige and as the landscape becomes more hilly, the vineyards appear.
You just have to look at Eugen and Bettina, to see that they are enjoying this biking excursion. They chatter and laugh, stress and tension just melt away today. From time to time, they take a break and show us and the film makers from F-Tech wonderful views and curiosities from the edge of the track. These include unusual perspectives over stately wine-growing estates, abandoned locomotives and last, but not least wineries of world renown.
Shortly after Appiano, the cycle track drops down and rolls downwards to Lake Caldaro. The largest lake in South Tyrol is at its most beautiful today and reflects the sunlight across its surface. "Wow!" they both exclaim and Bettina - who is in fact a skilled photographer - says, "The light is simply fantastic today, you really must take a few more shots of it!"
The F-Tech lads take Bettina at her word and set up their equipment, putting Eugen and his wife perfectly in the frame. After a few changes in angle and position everyone is happy, and Eugen and Bettina decide that the stressful filming session has earned them a good snack and a glass of South Tyrolean wine. And so it has! "Every time we take a bike tour we come back here to the lake to enjoy the sun, the mild temperatures and not least the culinary delights of the region. We don’t manage often enough to shift down a gear and therefore we treasure such moments all the more," explains Eugen, before drinking a toast to Bettina.
The evening begins to creep in and the sun sinks lower and lower. Eugen and Bettina set off again and take their leave of us on the Val d'Adige cycle trail. "Till next time!"
