Up to the Passo Stelvio/Stilfserjoch

48 hairpin bends to bliss

The ideal starting point for this tour is the hamlet of Prato allo Stelvio on the Passo dello Stelvio. From Prato allo Stelvio the tour is about 25 km and 1,850 metres in difference in altitude. The average gradient is 9 - 11 percent, which must still be reckoned with, but the climb is relatively steady and does not force you to keep changing your rhythm. There are sufficient opportunities for refreshment along the road through the pass; here we would mention the Bella Vista Hotel in Trafoi, where with a bit of luck you will come across Gustav Thöni, the landlord and skiing legend. From the top of the pass the route leads downwards towards Switzerland (don’t forget your passport or identity card!) across the Umbrail Pass to Santa Maria/Müstair and through Val Monastero back into Italy. The tour then goes along the State road to Tubre and Glorenza, until shortly before Glorenza you turn right onto the municipal road and head back to Prato allo Stelvio.
