South Tyrol's first cycle path: from Bolzano to Salurn on the Wine Route

The Via Claudia Augusta stage from Bolzano to Salorno is one of the most relaxed and culturally interesting sections of the route. Covering about 30 km, the well-maintained cycle path mostly follows the Adige River through the South Tyrolean lowlands—perfect for leisurely cyclists.

Starting in Bolzano, the route heads south through expansive orchards and vineyards. The path runs largely away from traffic and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Passing small villages, you reach the area around Ora, at the foot of the historic Castelfeder hill.

A true highlight is Egna, known for its medieval arcades, narrow streets, and historic buildings. It’s well worth a stop—not only for its charm but also for its history as a Roman station along the ancient trade route.

The route continues via Laghetti through an increasingly open valley landscape toward the Salorno bottleneck. Finally, you reach Salorno, the southernmost village in South Tyrol and the cultural boundary between German- and Italian-speaking regions.

Variation 1 leads to the western edge of the regional capital Bolzano. The best route is along the Isarco/Eisack River. Bolzano was already an important transport hub with settlements during Roman times. After the city of Bolzano the Isarco River runs into the Adige River. From a historic point of view, the villages to the south of Bolzano are strongly characterised by the navigable Adige River. Of special historic importance are the medieval village of Egna/Neumarkt with the only Roman road station in South Tyrol Endidae, and the village of Salorno/Salurn, which is located at the lowland Salurner Klause, the language border of South Tyrol.Interactiv map to plan your journey along the Via Claudia Augusta on www.viaclaudia.org
