Road bike
This demanding road bike tour takes you from Auer, Neumarkt or Salurn a.d.W. up to the mountain hamlet of Gfrill, perched above the Adige Valley. Covering approx. 52 km and 1,240 meters of elevation gain, the route combines steep climbs, cultural highlights and magnificent alpine views – perfect for well-trained riders seeking a true South Tyrolean challenge.
Directions
The tour can start in Auer, Neumarkt or Salurn a.d.W., depending on your starting point. If you start in Auer, begin at the Castelfeder Tourist Office and follow Palainweg to the Adige Cycle Path heading south. From Neumarkt, Bahnhofstraße also leads directly to the cycle path, which you follow to Salurn a.d.W. From there, the route continues via Bahnhofstraße into the village centre. The real climb starts in Salurn a.d.W., with a steep ascent on winding roads to Buchholz (563 m). The road then continues through forests and meadows to the mountain village of Gfrill at 1,330 m. The descent initially follows the same route. Shortly before Salurn a.d.W., turn right towards Laag and return through the apple orchards to the Adige Cycle Path, continuing to Auer or Neumarkt.
Description to arrive at destination
All three towns – Auer, Neumarktand Salurn a.d.W.– are accessible via the A22 motorway (exit Neumarkt/ Auer) or regional trains running between Bozen and Trento.
Parking
Public parking is available near the train stations and town centres. On weekends, early arrival is recommended.
Public transport
Frequent regional trains and buses serve Auer, Neumarkt and Salurn a.d.W. Bikes are permitted with a valid bicycle ticket. With the Südtirols Süden Card, public transport is free (bike not included).
Recommended equipment
Recommended: a well-maintained road bike with climbing gears, helmet, repair kit, bottle, gloves, windbreaker, and optional GPS or printed map.
