General description
This scenic mountain bike tour takes you across the sunny plateau of Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen – one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in South Tyrol. The 37 km circular route starts and ends at the mountain station of the Kohlern/Colle cable car in Bolzano/Bozen and includes 750 m of elevation gain. A perfect blend of nature, physical activity and stunning views – best enjoyed from late spring to autumn.
Route description

Take the Kohlern cable car from Bolzano/Bozen to the upper station at Bauernkohlern/Colle dei Contadini. From there, head south and turn onto a gravel road after about 400 metres. Follow the E5 trail through “Herrenkohlern”. After the small church, turn right into the “Wolfstal” valley. continue via trails 4a and 6 to “Schneiderwiesen” restaurant. Climb further on forest road No. 1 up to Rotwand. From Klausalm, descend through meadows and farms to Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen, then return north along the E5 trail to the cable car.

Description to arrive at destination

The tour starts and ends at the Kohlern/Colle cable car station in Bolzano/Bozen. From Auer/Ora, take a regional train or drive to Bolzano. The lower station is reachable by city bus or bike from the Oberau district.

Parking

Parking is available at the lower cable car station. On weekends, early arrival is recommended.

Public transport

From Auer/Ora, take a regional train to Bolzano/Bozen. Continue by city bus (line 12 or 111) or bike to the cable car. With the Südtirols Süden Card, the cable car ride is free of charge (bike transport requires an extra ticket).

Safety instructions

This is an easy to moderately difficult tour but requires confidence on gravel paths and downhill sections. Always wear a helmet and check your bike before departure. Avoid the tour in rainy or unstable weather.

Equipment
A robust mountain bike, helmet, suitable clothing, water, snacks and a basic repair kit are essential. GPS or a reliable map is also highly recommended.
