By bike from gentle vineyards to the majestic Dolomites – from Egna to Castelrotto

The bike tour from Egna to Castelrotto offers fantastic views and a truly unique experience of South Tyrol’s landscape. From Egna, you’ll cycle along the scenic South Tyrolean Wine Road. Your destination, Castelrotto, is a charming village nestled at the foot of the Dolomites. Its historic center, with narrow alleyways and a striking church tower, invites you to soak in the local atmosphere. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Dolomites – well worth every bit of effort along the way.

The starting point is easily accessible by train, and bikes are allowed on board. Unfortunately, buses do not transport bicycles. We recommend continuing from Castelrotto to Ponte Gardena (see Castelrotto–Vipiteno tour) to catch the train back from there.

Directions

The tour starts in the center of Neumarkt. From there, cycle towards the train station and then follow the Etsch cycle route towards Bolzano. Along the way, the Etsch cycle route becomes the Brenner cycle route and passes by Kardaun. At Atzwang, turn right onto Völser Ried road and continue past St. Konstantin. Then continue towards Seis until reaching the center of Kastelruth.

Description to arrive at destination

Neumarkt is best reached by train. The Neumarkt-Tramin train station is located close to the center and offers a convenient connection for the return journey after the cycling tour. Alternatively, it can also be reached by car via the A22 motorway.

At the public car parks in Neumarkt.

Public transport

From Bolzano train station, take the train to Neumarkt train station. From there, you can continue with bus lines 120, 122, 121, or 142 to reach the center of Neumarkt.
Another option is the direct bus connection with bus line 120 from Bolzano train station to Neumarkt.
Please check in advance whether bicycles can be taken on the bus.

Recommended equipment

The right equipment for the cycling tour includes sufficient sun protection, well-fitted and comfortable clothing, as well as a weather-suitable bicycle that is appropriate for the route.

Author's tip

Plan a stop in Kastelruth and take some time to explore the village. A visit to Bolzano is also recommended to discover the city and take a break.
