Gravel? Dolomites!

Gravel means freedom on two wheels. One bike for asphalt, gravel, and everything in between. Perfect if you want to not just see the Dolomites, but truly experience them.

Around the Dolomites, you’ll find countless gravel bike tours. Old military roads, forest tracks, and secluded side roads winding gently through the mountains. Often these are routes we’ve already conquered on hardtails – but on a gravel bike, they feel completely different. Sometimes challenging, sometimes easygoing, but always with breathtaking views.

"For me, the Dolomites are the most beautiful place for gravel riding. Where else can you roll for hours through larch forests and suddenly find yourself facing the Tre Cime di Lavaredo?" says Agnes, Hotel Innerhofer

So – feeling tempted? Your next gravel adventure in the Dolomites is already waiting.

What you should keep in mind when planning gravel bike tours in the Dolomites

Some advices

Check route & surface
The Dolomites are a wild mix of asphalt, gravel, forest trails, and old military roads.
Ask your host in your BikeHotel for the best tours for you.
Always download a current GPX track to your device and check in advance how much of it is “unsealed” – it’ll save you from surprises

Assess elevation realistically
50 km in the Dolomites can be tougher than 100 km back home.
Plan breaks and allow for some extra buffer time.

Weather & clothing
Dolomite weather is moody. Sunshine in the morning, thunderstorms in the afternoon.
So pack a wind jacket, a light rain jacket, and arm/knee warmers

Bike setup & tire choice
Ideal for the Dolomites: 38–45 mm gravel tires with light tread.
Tubeless reduces the risk of punctures on sharp rocks. And check your brake pads – there are lots of descents.

Food & water
In some valleys the next hut is far away.
Always carry two bottles plus emergency bars or gels

Book accommodation smart
Especially in July & August, many hotels (including BikeHotels Südtirol) are well booked.
Best to check the bike hotels here a few weeks in advance: bikehotels.it.

Respect for nature & locals
Barriers & prohibition signs usually exist for a reason.
A friendly “Hello!” opens doors – and hearts.
