DIY: The ultimate 10-point bike check before your South Tyrol holiday
Before taking your bike to South Tyrol, grab an Allen key, a pump and the necessary tools, and give your bike 5 minutes of attention. This 10-point DIY check is quick – and saves you from unpleasant surprises.
1. Front wheel – tire pressure
Are the tires flat or too soft? You’ll find the correct pressure on the tire sidewall. Just pump them up – and your bike will already feel much better.
2. Front brake
Pull the left brake lever – does it brake cleanly and without noise? Grinding or scratching sounds indicate worn brake pads. If in doubt: visit a bike shop.
3. Cockpit – handlebar, stem & grips
Shake the handlebar: is it tight? Does it move unintentionally? You can quickly tighten loose bolts with an Allen key. Everything should be firmly secured.
4. Suspension – fork
Stand next to your bike and press the handlebar down with your full weight. Does the fork compress and rebound? Then lean on the saddle and push down the rear – same test. If nothing happens or it feels sluggish, check pressure and settings or visit a bike shop.
5. Seatpost
Correct height and properly tightened? With a dropper post: press the lever and check that it moves smoothly up and down.
6. Motor – e-bike only
Battery charged, contacts clean, display working? Test all assistance levels briefly. Error messages? Have it checked by a dealer before your trip.
7. Gears & chain
Is the chain dry, dusty or rusty? Clean it with a cloth and apply fresh chain oil – only on the chain, not on discs or pads. Then shift through all gears. Everything engaging smoothly? Perfect. If not, the gears need adjustment.
8. Rear shock
Stand next to your bike, sit on the saddle and push down with your full weight. Does the shock respond? Does it compress and rebound? Otherwise, see point 4.
9. Rear brake
Same check as the front: pull the right brake lever and test braking power and noise. Replace worn brake pads.
10. Rear wheel – pressure & stability
Check both tires again: correct pressure? Wheels secure and without play? Give the wheel a quick shake – nothing should wobble or rattle.
