Cycling through South Tyrol: Tips to find accommodation for just one night
Cycling holidays are booming. Whether on a gravel bike, e-bike, or trekking bike: multi-day bike trips are more popular than ever. Some of Europe’s most beautiful cycling routes run through South Tyrol – such as the Via Claudia Augusta, the Ciclovia del Sole, or the München-Venice bike route. The biggest challenge when planning? Finding accommodation for just one night. Here are the most important tips for securing one-night stays during your cycling journey through South Tyrol.
South Tyrol’s BikeHotels are Bett+Bike certified and are therefore “obliged” to host cyclists even for a single night. However, it’s understandable that they’re not too eager to do so in high season – after all, a room could be rented for a whole week, and last-minute bookings make the schedule look patchy.
5 tips to still get a one-night stay on your bike tour:
The right timing.
Even if you already know that you’ll be cycling through the Merano area on August 18, don’t try to book a room too early. Chances are, you won’t get one. Instead, inquire just two or three days before.
Stay flexible.
Even if Merano or Bressanone is your planned overnight stop: be flexible enough to stay somewhere nearby – either before or after your planned destination. You’ll ride the extra kilometers anyway.
Pick up the phone.
Many BikeHotels block one-night stays online to leave room for longer bookings. A short phone call is often all it takes to get a spontaneous room – especially if you’re arriving the same or next day (see point 1).
Be polite.
Trust us: saying “You’re Bett+Bike, you have to give us a room!” won’t help at all. No, a hotel doesn’t have to do anything. But it can. And it’s much more likely to help if you approach them respectfully. Briefly explain your situation and accept it if they really have no availability.
Be smart.
If there’s really no room available, ask for a recommendation. The hotels know each other and are often happy to help.
Alternatively, you can book an organized cycling tour, where a travel operator takes care of accommodation and luggage transfer. This saves you a lot of effort and uncertainty.
